Raccoon Removal via Roof Vent Entry – Oshawa

Job Overview

Location: Oshawa, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey house with attached garage
Problem: Nighttime activity originating from the roof area
Service: Raccoon removal and roof-level wildlife exclusion
Visits: 2

Summary

Our team completed a two-visit raccoon removal at a detached residential property in Oshawa. The primary entry point was a roof vent that had been torn open, allowing access into the roof cavity. Humane one-way doors were installed to allow all raccoons to exit, followed by permanent vent screening and final confirmation that no further activity was present.

Background / Property Context

The property is a detached two-storey home with an asphalt-shingle roof and multiple roof and plumbing vents. Work was completed in March, with no winter weather conditions preventing roof access or installation.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported ongoing nighttime noise and movement coming from the roof area, raising concern about wildlife entering the home through the roof system.

Inspection & Findings

A full roof inspection identified a damaged roof vent that had been pulled open, consistent with raccoon entry behavior. Additional roof and plumbing vents were also present and assessed for vulnerability. No other structural damage was observed at the time of inspection.

Cause Analysis

Raccoons are strong climbers and commonly target roof vents as entry points, especially when vent covers are weakened or unsecured. Once a vent is compromised, repeated access can occur until the opening is properly secured. Seasonal behavior during late winter and early spring can increase roof activity as animals seek shelter.

Treatment / Removal

A humane, non-lethal removal process was used. One-way doors were installed over the confirmed entry point to allow adult raccoons to exit while preventing re-entry. Due to timing within raccoon baby season, a secondary one-way setup was used to account for mobile young. This approach allowed all animals to vacate the structure safely.

Exclusion & Repairs

Following removal activity, roof-level exclusion work was completed:

  • Three roof vents were secured with galvanized steel vent cages
  • Two plumbing vents were reinforced with galvanized steel mesh
  • All materials were mechanically fastened to withstand future wildlife pressure

Photos show roof vents before and after screening, a one-way door installed over the damaged vent opening, and completed vent protection integrated with the existing shingles.
