Squirrel Entry Through Open Wall Pipe on Second-Floor Roofline — Oshawa

Job Overview

Location: Oshawa, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey house with attached garage
Problem: Early morning wildlife activity on or within the roof
Service: Squirrel removal and exclusion
Visits: 2 visits

Summary

Our team at Pest Control Oshawa responded to reports of early morning roof activity. An inspection confirmed squirrel access via an open wall pipe on the second floor. Humane exclusion was completed using a one-way door and permanent vent protection. A follow-up visit confirmed resolution with no further activity.

Background / Property Context

The property is a detached, two-storey residential structure with rooflines and wall penetrations typical of suburban homes. Elevated access points and nearby trees can make upper wall and roof features vulnerable to wildlife entry.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported repeated sounds and movement on or inside the roof during early morning hours, raising concern about squirrels entering the structure.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial inspection, technician Grant accessed the roof and upper wall areas. An open pipe on the second-floor wall was identified as the primary entry point. Additional roofline and soffit areas were assessed for secondary vulnerabilities commonly used by squirrels.

Cause Analysis

Squirrels frequently exploit open or unprotected wall penetrations to access warm, sheltered spaces. Second-storey pipes and vents are particularly susceptible when left uncovered. Proximity to rooflines allows easy access and repeated use once an entry point is established.

Treatment / Removal

A humane, non-lethal exclusion approach was used. A squirrel one-way door was installed over the primary entry point at the base of the wall, allowing the animal to exit without re-entry. Work was performed to prevent entrapment and ensure normal animal movement away from the structure.

Exclusion & Repairs

Permanent exclusion measures were completed following removal:

  • Installation of a wall vent cover over the previously open pipe
  • Securing screened barriers at vulnerable soffit and wall junctions
All materials were fitted flush to the structure to withstand weather and prevent future access.
