Job Overview
Location: Oshawa, Ontario
Structure: Two-story detached house with aluminum siding and lattice-style base
Problem: Ongoing rat activity inside the home and along the exterior perimeter
Service: Rat treatment
Visits: 3
Summary
The customer reported rat activity in their home in Oshawa. Our team at Pest Control Whitby responded to a long-standing rat issue affecting both the interior and exterior of a detached residential property in Whitby. Activity had been present for over a year. A multi-visit treatment plan was implemented to address interior risks while reducing the exterior rat population through monitored baiting.
Background / Property Context
The structure was a two-story detached house with aluminum siding. The base of the exterior consisted of a lattice-style design that left the lower perimeter largely open. Landscaping and hardscaping were present along the foundation, creating concealed conditions suitable for rodent movement and harbourage.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported hearing and seeing rats inside the house as well as regular exterior activity. The concern was the persistence of the issue despite its long duration and the potential for rats to access wall cavities and interior spaces.
Inspection & Findings
Inspection confirmed active rat presence. Interior areas showed signs consistent with rodent movement, and the exterior perimeter revealed multiple access points at the base of the structure. The open lattice-style foundation allowed unrestricted entry beneath the house. Exterior photos show gaps along the foundation line and disturbed soil consistent with rodent travel routes. Interior photos show traps positioned near utility and plumbing areas where activity was concentrated.
Cause Analysis
The infestation was primarily driven by structural vulnerability at the base of the home. An open lattice foundation provided continuous access for rats to move beneath and into the structure. Exterior ground cover and proximity to foundation openings supported ongoing activity and population growth over time.
Treatment / Removal
All pest control work was performed by a licensed exterminator in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.
On the initial visit, large commercial-grade snap traps were placed in interior areas of high activity to control rats without the risk of carcasses remaining inside wall voids. On the exterior, large weighted, tamper-resistant bait stations containing commercial-grade rodenticide were installed to address the broader outdoor population. The rodenticide was used as part of a controlled exterior baiting program.
A rodent one-way door was installed at the primary entry point to allow rats to exit the interior space while preventing re-entry. The homeowner declined full exterior exclusion work and indicated they would address permanent repairs independently.
Exclusion & Repairs
Targeted sealing was completed at identified entry points associated with the main access location. Due to the fully open nature of the lattice-style base, comprehensive exclusion was recommended but not performed as part of this service. The one-way door served as a temporary measure to relieve interior activity.
Outcome & Confirmation
Interior rat activity was resolved following the initial treatment and installation of traps and the one-way door. Subsequent visits focused on exterior bait station maintenance, where high feeding levels confirmed ongoing reduction of the exterior population. Preventative exterior baiting continued through the final visit. No further interior activity was reported.
Technician Notes
The initial assessment and treatment were completed by Grant, who confirmed both interior and exterior activity. Follow-up visits involved rebaiting exterior stations due to significant consumption, indicating effective uptake. No access limitations were encountered during any visit.
