Rat Treatment and Exclusion – Oshawa

Job Overview

Location: Oshawa, Ontario
Structure: Detached two-storey residential house with attached garage
Problem: Ongoing rat activity inside the home with a recurring exterior population
Service: Interior and exterior rat control treatment
Visits: Three

Summary

The customer reported interior rat activity in her home in Oshawa. We addressed a long-standing rat issue at a detached residential property in Oshawa. The work involved confirmed interior activity, a persistent exterior population, and multiple follow-up visits over several years. Treatments focused on resolving active interior concerns while managing exterior pressure through monitoring and rebaiting.

Background / Property Context

The property is a detached, two-storey home with an attached garage. Utility penetrations and service lines were present at ground level along the foundation. These areas are commonly exposed to rodent pressure, particularly where exterior populations are established.

Customer Concern

The homeowner reported rat activity inside the house. This was part of an ongoing situation, with previous interior issues having been resolved in the past, followed by continued exterior rat pressure and intermittent interior reoccurrence over the years.

Inspection & Findings

During the initial visit, active rat signs were confirmed inside the home. Exterior inspection identified conditions consistent with ongoing rodent travel along the foundation. A utility line penetration was identified as a likely entry point. Subsequent visits focused on confirming whether interior activity had returned and assessing exterior bait station activity.

Photos provided show:

  • Large snap traps positioned indoors along foundation walls
  • Exterior tamper-resistant bait stations placed at grade near the foundation
  • Utility and service line penetrations at the brick façade
  • Metal screening installed around a pipe penetration

Cause Analysis

Rats were able to access the structure due to persistent exterior populations combined with vulnerable utility line penetrations at ground level. Repeated exterior pressure increased the likelihood of re-entry over time. Without full perimeter exclusion, these conditions allowed occasional interior activity to recur.

Treatment / Removal

On the initial visit, our licensed exterminator completed a full interior and exterior rat treatment in accordance with Ontario Ministry of the Environment guidelines.

  • Commercial-grade snap traps were placed indoors in areas of confirmed activity to avoid rats dying within wall cavities.
  • Large, weighted, tamper-resistant bait stations containing commercial-grade rodenticide were installed around the exterior to address the broader population.

A one-way door was installed over the identified utility line entry point to allow rats to exit while preventing re-entry.

Exclusion & Repairs

The utility line penetration was addressed with a one-way door during the first visit. Full exterior exclusion and deck trenching were inspected and discussed with the homeowner, and a quote was provided. No additional exclusion work was completed beyond the one-way door installation.

Outcome & Confirmation

Following the initial treatment and one-way door installation, interior rat activity ceased and the door was later removed. Two years later, the homeowner reported new interior concerns. On follow-up inspection, interior activity had already ended, and exterior bait stations were rebaited. After two additional rebaiting visits, overall rat activity was reported to have reduced, with no ongoing interior issues noted.

Technician Notes

The work was carried out by Grant. Interior trapping was prioritized to control active rats safely, while exterior baiting was maintained to manage long-term pressure. Rechecks confirmed reduced activity following repeated exterior rebaiting.
